Anthony Caro (1924-2013) achieved international renown as Britain’s leading sculptor of the generation after Henry Moore. Caro first shocked the art world in the 1960s with brightly-painted abstract steel sculptures that he made after visiting the U.S.A. and studying the work of David Smith and of the Colour Field Painters. This richly-illustrated and entertaining lecture will set this important exhibition in the context of both Caro’s career and of his long and happy marriage to the painter Sheila Girling. The speaker is Britain’s foremost scholar on Caro, having collaborated with him in curating four international exhibitions of his work. JuliusBryantalso wrote five books on his friend and neighbour and continues to contribute to exhibition catalogues. He works at the Victoria and Albert Museum as Keeper of Word and Image.
